Planning a northern Tanzania safari itinerary means choosing how many days you can travel, which parks fit your wildlife goals, and whether you will finish on the coast. Most first-time visitors focus on the Tanzania Northern Circuit: Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Serengeti National Park. This guide explains how those parks fit together, how long to stay in each, and where to find ready-made routes on our safari tours page.

What is the Tanzania Northern Circuit?
The northern circuit is Tanzania’s most popular safari loop. It usually starts near Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha, then moves through baobab woodlands, the Ngorongoro highlands, and the Serengeti plains. Many travelers add Zanzibar & Coast after bush days for beach time and Stone Town culture.
Browse all parks on our safari destinations hub, or jump straight to the sections below for park-by-park planning. Learn more about Extenterra Safari’s and how we work with local guides and handpicked lodges.
Tarangire National Park: elephants and baobabs
Tarangire rewards visitors who love elephants and iconic baobab silhouettes. In the dry season, herds gather along the Tarangire River. Lions, giraffes, zebra, and buffalo are common on full-day game drives. One full day is enough for many express itineraries; two nights nearby suits photographers who want dawn and dusk light.
Short on time? Our 3-day Northern Tanzania express safari pairs Tarangire with Ngorongoro in a focused route. If you have one extra day, the 4-day Ngorongoro & Tarangire extension adds more relaxed pacing after Kilimanjaro or before Zanzibar.
Ngorongoro Crater: Big Five in one caldera
The Ngorongoro Crater is a UNESCO-listed caldera with dense wildlife on the floor. Black rhino, lion prides, flamingos on Lake Magadi, and large herds of wildebeest and zebra make it one of Africa’s strongest single-day safari experiences. Most itineraries include one full crater descent with a picnic lunch.
For timing, rules, and what to expect on the floor, read our dedicated Ngorongoro Crater safari guide. Combine crater day with Tarangire on the 4-day northern parks extension or build a longer route that continues to the Serengeti.
Serengeti National Park: plains, cats, and migration
The Serengeti is the anchor of most northern Tanzania safari itineraries. Central Serengeti (Seronera) offers year-round big cat country. Northern sectors near Kogatende matter for Great Migration river crossings, usually July through October. Southern plains shine for calving season, roughly January through March.
Match your dates to herd movements in our Serengeti Great Migration guide, then look at a full circuit package such as the 14-day Great Migration & Northern Circuit safari. Serengeti nights deserve at least three to five days if migration or cats are your main goal.

Sample 7-day northern Tanzania safari route
This sample is a starting point, not a fixed departure. We adjust nights and lodges for your flights and season.
- Day 1: Arrive JRO, transfer to Arusha, briefing.
- Day 2: Full day Tarangire National Park.
- Day 3: Transfer to Ngorongoro highlands.
- Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater floor game drive.
- Days 5 to 7: Serengeti game drives (sector depends on month).
Extend to ten or fourteen days for migration sectors or a flight to Zanzibar. Seasonal detail lives in our best time to visit Tanzania article.
Practical planning checklist
- Confirm international flights into JRO or Dar es Salaam before locking lodges.
- Allow an early start on crater day; flights home should depart after 18:00 when possible.
- Pack neutral layers and soft bags; see what to pack for a Tanzania safari.
- Book peak-season lodges (July to October) several months ahead.
Extenterra tip: Build your itinerary around wildlife goals first, then add beach or trekking. A migration-focused Serengeti needs different lodge sectors than a classic Big Five crater and elephant loop.
