Packing light for changing temperatures is the goal on any Tanzania safari. You will layer up at dawn, peel off by mid-morning, and pull a fleece on after sunset. Roads can be dusty; small planes enforce strict bag weight. This list focuses on what our Arusha guides see guests forget most often, with links to deeper health and visa notes on our site.

Pair this article with best time to visit for season-specific clothing and travel tips for vaccinations and insurance.

Clothing colors and layers

Wear neutral tones: khaki, olive, brown, and stone. Avoid bright blue and black fabrics that attract tsetse flies in some woodland parks. Bring a wide-brim hat, UV sunglasses, and a light scarf for dust. Long sleeves help at dawn; breathable short sleeves work by lunch.

One warm fleece or softshell is enough for most months; July and August mornings on the Ngorongoro rim can feel colder. Comfortable closed shoes matter more than fashion boots on bumpy tracks.

Optics, cameras, and power

Binoculars (8×42 is a sweet spot) transform every game drive. Bring extra memory cards, a bean bag or monopod for window photography, and sealed bags for dust. Lodges often have limited outlets overnight; pack a multi-port USB charger and one travel adapter (UK-style Type G is common).

Preview wildlife you may photograph in our gallery, then choose trip length on safari tours.

Extenterra tip

Pack binoculars in your carry-on. Checked baggage handlers and small planes are hard on optics.

Health kit and documents

Carry passport, printed e-visa approval, travel insurance details, and lodge vouchers in a waterproof pouch. Personal meds, repellent with DEET or picaridin, sunblock, lip balm, and basic stomach remedies belong in your daypack. Discuss malaria prophylaxis with your doctor based on season and parks visited.

Use a soft duffel under 15 to 20 kg for coastal flights and roof racks. Hard suitcases do not fit well in safari vehicles. Keep a daypack with sunscreen, hat, and binoculars within reach. Laundry services exist at mid-range and luxury lodges; plan to re-wear neutral layers.

Planning a bush-and-beach trip? Add reef-safe swimwear and a cover-up for Zanzibar after safari. Questions? Contact Extenterra Safari’s.

Good packing reduces friction on the road: less time digging for gear, more time watching lions. We send a final checklist with your itinerary PDF before departure from Arusha.
